Yankee Homecoming Parade, Summer 2008

GAL Float (Octopus’s Garden) at Yankee Homecoming Parade, Newburyport, MA, 2008

In July, GAL and the New Eden Collaborative worked together on the design and construction of a float for Newburyport’s Yankee Homecoming parade. The theme of the float was The Octopus’s Garden – One Earth One Family. Our float won the coveted Mayor’s Award for originality and best float exemplifying Yankee Homecoming’s theme of “Family”.
The New Eden Collaborative will be continuing next year as the community organic gardens will be expanding from 12 plots to 30. GAL projects for next year include an extension of the Sustainability Mural, working with organic gardeners in construction of Waste Folly (a unique compost pile), Community News and Eco Action board, recycled scare crows and whirligigs, and working with the First Parish Church of Newbury, MA in creating a 20′ x 20′ outdoor labyrinth.

New Eden Collaborative

In the spring of 2008 GAL began collaborating with the First Parish Church of Newbury, Greater Newburyport CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) growers, shareholders, and organic “Victory Gardeners” in an experiment in sustainable community. GAL will be working with the three communities documenting their experience of working together throughout the growing season. GAL’s ongoing projects include a community journal and a mural inside the church inspired by New Eden members’ input on their vision of a sustainable future. New Eden members will also be encouraged to participate in “Thought for Food” a 12-week cyber reflection on the nature of nurture.

The Green Artists League (GAL) is an interdisciplinary collective of artists who have come together to create public art that addresses the global environmental crisis. GAL strives to be a model of community, collaboration, and service. Viewing art as an agent for transformation, GAL engages the public through interactive art experiences. We hope to raise awareness and inspire people to adopt environmentally healthy behaviors and attitudes. The Green Artists League is both an art-making collaborative and a forum for contemporary artists to explore the relationship of art and ethics in an era of ecological degradation.

GAL was founded in 2006 as the cultural wing of the Newburyport environmental organization called Seacoast Environmental Energy Design. GAL has since grown to include artists from New Hampshire and Boston’s North Shore. Through our Green Art Forum and cyber-networking, GAL hopes to create a broad network of environmentally conscious artists who will work with their prospective communities to deepen environmental awareness.

Maudslay Outdoor Sculpture Installation

Earlier this year the Green Artists’ League debuted their “Air Your Dirty Laundry” Installation at Fowle’s Coffee Shop in Newburyport, MA. Above is a sketch using a photo of a portion of this installation that was submitted to give an idea of how this installation will be adapted for the 10th Annual Maudslay State Park Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit in Newburyport, which will run from Sunday, September 14th, 2008 through Sunday, October 5th, 2008. Members of the Green Artists‘ League will be on hand at the installation from 1 P.M. to 3 P.M., weather permitting, on Sundays while the exhibit is running, and on Saturday, September 20th, the day of the official opening, from 3 P.M. to 6 P.M.,

The second photo was taken at Maudslay on the first weekend of the exhibit. Participants can write their own eco-confessions on articles of clothing on Sunday afternoons during the show’s run, and then hang them on the line. GAL members supply the clothing, markers, and clothespins!
